Description
The Halls of Stormweather is the first book in a series that explores the mean streets of a city where everything has a price, and even the wealthiest families will do anything to survive. Content The novel of seven parts, done to introduce the seven main characters: "A tale in seven parts set within the walls of the mighty city of Selgaunt, which sits perched on the northern coast of the Sea of Fallen Stars in the realm of Sembia."
It takes place during the winter of the year of the Unstrung Harp, 1371 by Dalereckoning. The stories focuses on the merchant lord family of Uskevren: Thamalon Uskevren - the embattled patriarch is the hard foundation of the family; Shamur Uskevren - a women with a very seedy past and full of power; Thamalon Uskevren - first born and heir to the family..if he can stay alive long enough to claim it; Thazienne Uskevren - poor little rich girl who prowls the streets like a cat, a huntress of dark - after all mother like daughter; Talbot Uskevren - the second son whom carries more than one potentially deadly curse to his name; Erevis Cale - trusted servant, master thief - he serves two masters; and Larjin - innocent maid with hidden secrets of her own, secrets which are hidden in her blood.
Opinion Each of the book's sevens authors has "claimed" a character as his or hers, and goes about giving a detailed look into him or her. The tales explore the city in-depth, both the higher echelons and the dark alleys. It gives an excellent overview of the city and Sembia in general. True to the forgotten Realms material that I have come across in along time. The quality of writing is some of the highest caliber I have seen in a long time. Which is to say a lot, when one takes in account my personal library (grin). I am one of the Dark Elf Nutcases running around on the list, and I never thought I would say this but the list’s own Paul Kemp’s story about Erevis Cale, has now become my favorite piece of realms literature. I only hope he can continue on with this level of writing. |
