City of Splendors
Not available as new from Amazon.com, as City of Splendors is out-of-print.
Description
This excellent campaign expansion details Waterdeep even greater that Waterdeep and the North and City System. Two poster maps make up the plan of Waterdeep, two more maps show the adventurers quarter, and the others show a detailed tavern plan and a cross section of Castle Waterdeep. The books are well detailed and are the ultimate resource for running a campaign in the greatest city of the Realms.

As soon as I broke the shrinkwrap and opened the box, I *knew* that it was money well spent. This is one product that WotC would do well to re-release, and if you want to run adventures in Waterdeep you *need* this set like no other, IMO.
Author: Steven Schend (with a little help from Ed, if I read correctly)
Contents 128-page Campaign Guide with expanded city information, a timeline of Waterdeep history, the legal system, select NPCs (mainly the Lords and a few law enforcers), and new spells. Though some of this has been published in other products, it is updated here.
96-page Who's Who in Waterdeep with details of *many* of Waterdeep's nobles, plus other NPCs of note.
64-page Adventurer's Guide to the City, designed with players in mind, detailing the Adventurers' Quarter. Basically, think of it as a guide to where one can 'get into trouble' (or adventure, as some would call it!) and where to avoid it.
16-page Secrets of the City, a companion to the Adventurer's Guide with the DM information necessary to make use of the former without letting players know too much.
6 poster maps of the city. Two are combined to make a map of Waterdeep, one is a map of Castle Waterdeep from the City System boxed set, one is a map of the Thirsty Throat Tavern, and the last two are 'photo maps' of the Adventurers' Quarter (my favorite maps of the lot).
13 totally new monsters plus 2 older monsters on 8 double-sided Monstrous Compendium Annex sheets: Curst*, Doppelganger (Greater), Duhlarkin, Ghaunadan, Gulguthydra, Hakeashar, Leucrotta (Greater), Nyth*, Palimpsest, Peltast, Raggamoffyn, Sewerm, Shadowrath, Watchspider, Wereshark.
*indicates old monsters that appear again.
Opinions Great product all around! Steve took the older stuff, revamped it and added more where he felt things were 'missing'. The NPCs are colorful and interesting, and there are numerous hooks for getting more than one campaign going in Waterdeep, both above the streets and below. With this set, I finally feel I have a close approximation of 'all there is to know' about Waterdeep and its people. The bottom line is that if you have to sell your neighbor's dog (or pesky kid) on the black market to get this set, then do it! 8) |
