How to check for list downage
As a general rule of thumb, do the following if you aren't receiving mail from the list:
1) Check the following web page:
http://network54.com/Hide/Forum/26390 for any known "official" (ie, known to the monitorial staff) problems with the list. If there is no information about a list outage, proceed to 2.
2) Ping the server oracle.wizards.com. This will tell you whether theserver is active or not. To do this, open a Dos window (for Win95/98 users), type the command: ping oracle.wizard.com, and wait for the result.
In any case, do NOT repeatedly ping the server, nor send repeated "Hey, is anyone there?!" messages; they do nothing but place more of a strain on an already overloaded server.
3) If the ping results in "timed out" responses, yes, the list is down. If not, then send a message to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with the command "thanks" (without the quotes) in the body. If you don't get a prompt response, the server is down.
