Post copied from Wizard of the Coast's D&D-forum:
quote: Hello All. I wanted to make a single thread where we can all talk about our thoughts and memories of Gary Gygax. We'll be trying our best to merge other threads into this one. We've also created a few special avatars that people may use on our forums to help express their support and sympathy.
The news has come as a bit of a shock to most of us in the WotC office today. While it's hard to imagine anything anyone can say could do this event justice, we've released the following statement:
Today, Wizards of the Coast was deeply saddened to learn that Gary Gygax passed away in his home at age 69. Gygax was a co-creator of the Dungeons & Dragons game. His innovation created an entirely new type of hobby that now attracts millions of players worldwide to face-to-face and online roleplaying games. Gygax was a grand storyteller renowned for his unique style, sprawling "Gygaxian" adventures, and the fantastic World of Greyhawk. He inspired generations of players, designers, and authors, and he will be sorely missed by legions of fans. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
Thanks, -Mike __________________ Mike Lescault Online Communities Manager Wizards of the Coast

I've never had the chance to meet him myself, but thanks to his creation, I have had so much fun that I doubt I ever would have had, nor the chance to meet so many people over the years.
Here's to you Gary, may your d20s always roll high!!

Jesus Saves, the rest of you take damage. An evil DM is better than a nice DM, you know what to expect from an evil one.

Growing up in Rockford Illinois, I was privileged to get the chance to know Gary, starting sometime during the winter of 1977. I met him through a mutual friend, Jeff Perrin (who co-authored the original Chainmail rules with EGG).
Over the years, I had the chance to play a variety of games with Gary (mostly historical miniatures and various railroad board games - never D&D) and always found him to be a sportsman and excellent storyteller, as well as a fierce competitor. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, and thousands who never met him. |

My gaming group and I did a grand toast to Gary during our gaming session last week.We were all saddened by the news, since Gary had helped in the making of something that introduced many people to something fun and interesting.
He will be missed by many, and his legacy will live in the hearts of every gamer that has ever (and will) pick up a polyhedral die to make an attack, save or check. |

I got to briefly meet Gary at last year's GenCon Indy. He was very gracious, and seemed to be genuinely touched by all the thanks and praise heaped upon him by so many gamers in one place.
I think the best thing I saw that weekend, was Gary participating in Tracy Hickman's "Killer Breakfast". For those that don't know, this is an event run by Tracy and his wife, where there is a table set up on the stage with eight chairs around it, sort of like a typical gaming area. Tracy gives a scene, something like: "You're walking down the road toward the castle, and the drawbridge is down. From the trees nearby, a horde of undead streams toward you. They're between you and the castle. What do you do?"
At this point, each person at the table has a chance to tell what they will do. The funnier or more creative (In other words, the more you make the Hickmans laugh) the more likely you are to survive. Otherwise, Tracy will say "You're dead", and the next person in line takes your place. You're given a character sheet that basically has the time you sit down on it, and then the time you die is written in, along with some basic stats. There are props involved, singing numbers etc. It's a great time.
Anyway, back to the point, Gary was in the line, and when he came on stage, he got a standing ovation. Tracy told the crowd he wasn't happy, because now he'd be forced to kill Gary at some point. However, Gary made it very difficult on Tracy, and was the only survivor at least 3 straight rounds. It was clear he was having a lot of fun, and the crowd loved it. It was quite a moment, and I was glad to be a part of it. |
