The new poll is now up, which asks you the following:
Will the release of a 4th ed D&D be bad for the Realms? |

I voted!
I'm assuming this is for discussing the poll.
4th ed will be a good thing I think, but as with most things will be a mixed bag of good and bad.
I continue to assert that they are actually making 4th ed to be programmer-friendly first. If this allows for good PnP play...even better.
When I was in beta-testing for DDO, the forums were full of people complaining (me inc) about Turbine's game engine and how it had major problems in the code for the D&D rules.
Now I know this sounds like furnishing a living room before the walls and roof go up....but they are doing it this way.
Now I could be wrong and they aren't focusing on video game code....but ask yourself ; where's the $ at? PnP or video games? Right.
Now I seem to have "gotten lucky" as I never purchased much 3rd ed. That means for me it will be less painful to buy 4th ed. Now for you hard-core DM's that have spent a great deal on 3rd ed, you have my sympathies.
Now on the bright side....I'm hoping that this push for 4th ed will also include new and better materials. New guides to the realms, new maps, new novels are all good things. The bad news of course will be that you will have a stack of now obsolete book on races, PrC's and spells.
One thing I think we can count on....they will change the basic math from the d20 system. This of course precludes that my theory on game dynamics for programming is correct, but I think time will prove my info correct. Or not lol. But assuming it is correct, this will be a negative part IMO.
Personally I love the d20 system. It's simple, fast and adaptable. The math is similar to 2nd ed, but so much more streamlined. No more negative AC's, ubsurd saving throw charts, and THAC0.
Now it is possible that the system they decide to use will not only work well for video games, but also be a comfortable and smooth system for PnP play. But I kinda doubt that humans will want to use a computer-code-friendly system. This does beg the question though ; If 4th ed is code friendly then Excel and other programs should be a nice snug fit for computer assisted PnP play or over the net. Well here's to hoping anyway.
One other note, 4th ed IS coming. Now we can choose to say "bollocks" to 4th ed and stick with 3rd...but I think many will be curious to see how it works. Maybe let someone you know buy the books first and play some before you rush out and drop a $1000.
I will reiterate that Aussiegamer prob hates the entire idea of 4th ed. The man has devoted alot of time and work making some awesome 3rd ed material. As I'm sure have many of you. The problem as I see it will be in translation. How difficult would it be to convert your 3rd ed materials you designed to 4th? Perhaps, for some, the solution will be to play some 4th ed but still continue to play 3rd or "classic" D&D.
The greatest possitive for me is that 4th ed will also herald in many new games. Neverwinter Nights 2 for one. (If NWN2 is not 4th ed then...wow, sounds like someone missed a meeting) Also I continue to hold out hope that DDO will be redefined and they will put out a FR DDO. I further hope that anyone...freakin Coleco I dont care, anyone other than Turbine is chosen. They are deplorable for being late, bugs and lag. Asheron's Call and AC2 and DDO Stormreach have caused me enact a boycott of Turbine. But I digress....
An MMO in the FR would be awesome. Maybe they wont do DDO/FR but just make NWN2 into that. Either way looks like there will be new and exciting stuff with 4th ed.
So enjoy 3rd ed while you can. Good or bad 4th is coming. I hope this works out for the best for all of you. |

I am sick and tired of updating my rule books becuase they have to make more money.
I saw the transit from 2ed to 3rd ed as a step forward, and then the "Opps! we thought we play tested this using heaps of people but look at ALL these problems that you found!!" 3.5 transit.
I again saw this as a good thing, as it did fixed the mistakes they made in 3rd ed.
I do not see that 4th ed is required or needed as there is no reason that I know of to change the basic rules.
But here we go again.....I am going to wait for 4.5 if I even consider changing.
It's a ploy to re-re-release the same material in the new books changed for the bright and shiny 4th ed, under the banner "All new material" as they do with 3.5 now.
Some of the book from 3.0 never got the change to 3.5, so I supppose then another question is will they bother to update the campaign books? Likely not!
So in the end the change will kill off FR as they concentrat on Ebberron or the NEW setting for the NEW 4th ed. |

| I gotta disagree. A lot of books didn't get new 3.5 versions because the change wasn't significant enough to warrant it. 3.0 to 3.5 didn't change the basics, it just repaired the mistakes made. New books were not required in some cases, so, in order to not irritate the fanbase TOO much, they held back. So really, whether it's bad for the realms in particular depends on how big a change this is. If it's a complete overhaul, I think FR will get rereleased along with everything else. But, for my money, I'm just gonna ignore it until I can't find anyone who still plays 3.5 anymore, because it's not worth my money to replace a game that I'm very happy with. And for what it's worth, 3.5 was already well established before I considered updating from 2nd ed, and I'm more than ready to continue my scroogish ways ;) |

I must have missed the memo, because I have yet to hear that there IS a 4th Edition coming any time in the near future.
And as to the actual poll question, I don't think a new edition of the D&D game will be bad for the Realms. Many of the 2nd edition products are still useable with a little conversion work, as are the 3rd Ed stuff. Despite all the doomsaying about the 3rd to 3.5 conversion, I have yet to throw out my Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting hardcover, despite the assertion by some that the book is now useless. Heck, I'm currently in a campaign based on a 2nd edition release.
Good products with good writing do not become useless simply because some rules change. |
Have fun, Philsiefrog |

the setting background yes will still be usable. After all the map is the same as are the towns.
The actual characters (NPC) though become worthless and will need redoing to use, as are the suggested treasures as are the monsters in the dungeons.
The point is that the "new" 3.5 books are mostly rehashing the 3.0 and thats complete bull. If its new then call it new if its reprint with minor changes then say so. Wizards really treat us gamers as dunces, and mores the problem some defend them and say its new.
Yes 4th ed is in the distance but if nothing is said then we all will be spending up big once again to fill the pockets once again for no real reason. |

My thoughts on 4th ed will really depend on where WotC is taking things. Just as Chilled Nova said, changes in itself is often good, as it makes the Realms advance and grow.
My worst fears is that a 4th edition will scare away a lot of FR-fans, due to increased costs for material they already have (i.e., if converting from 3.5 to 4th ed isn't easy). Just as Aussiegamer, Im going to wait with 4th edition as Im really comfortable with 3.5 at the moment. |

If my memory isn't too muddled, it has been out for five (or is it six years ). |

As someone who has EVERY 3.5 DnD book, all of the 3.0/3.5 FR, and a bunch of the second edition FR, it is far more likely that my obsession with Faerun will limit the number of 4.0 books that I will buy. I wonder if WizCo will carry FR into 4.0 and, if they do, what changes they will make to the metagame and maps (second edition maps don't mesh with the current ones). Unfortunately, I believe that if they do not release a 4th edition, 3.5 will be the last version of the game made by its current publisher. |

Sorry, but I gotta disagree with you Milotinous. Both WotC and Hasbro understand the economics of publishing. They know full-well that most of the Realms novels are excellent sellers and probably some of Wizards best (read most profitable) items.
Secondly, as someone who's been in the retail end of the hobby business on and off for most of the past 20 years, I can honestly say that Realms game suppliments remain as some of the best selling suppliments.
Now, I can't speak for WotC, but as a Midwest US hobby/game retailer who chats with many other hobby and comic shop owners/manager on a fairly regular basis, I can say that Realms 3.5 books are stable items on most game retail shelves. I can't see WotC letting go of the FR licence no matter what edition of the rules are currently in print. It's just too profitable.
We might not like where Hasbro/Wizards is taking the Forgotten Realms setting. We might not like the impact of certain novels on the game world. But I think we can rest assured that the setting will stay in print when 4th edition eventual comes out.
