Very few humanoids have gone to the Abyss and returned alive. Wulfgar, the barbarian, Jaraxle, it would seem, Elminster (what is the story behind that or should I read the book?) and an evil mage from the Netheril Trilogy whose name I can’t remember (thought she was not quite human when she returned). These are a few I can recall, are there others and is my list correct?

Hmmm, I guess that would depend on if you wanted to know about any PC's that have went in and come back out again.
I don't actually know of any other Novel characters, though.

There was at least one other novel (Waterdeep) where several characters including Elminster, Kelbun Blackstaff, Midnight, and a tavernkeeper whose name escapes me went to Abyss trying to head off Bhall's invasion of Waterdeep.

Other than that, I think your list of novel characters is correct - at least as much as I've read.

However, there are probably quite a few folks from the Realmswho have traveled to the lower planes. Several FR adventures - including the conclusion of the Bloodstone Pass series have PC's traveling through portals and gates to the Abyss or other of the lower planes. The Realms seem to have more than it's share of open gates.

Personally can not recommend Elminster in Hell just didn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.

Your characters could in Dungeon #107 Test of the Smoking Eye which looked pretty interesting.

You shouldn't bring a dagger to a stick fight when the stick is a staff or a wand.
What do you mean? Of course I made my save. Maybe your're not reading the rules right

Elminster in Hell was written only because the story in the first novel in the Return of the Archwizards demanded it (story-reason: The Shade wanted to remove Elminster from the Realms to keep him from meddling).

Well they did a good job messing up Old Elminster. Personally wouldn't mind seeing a little more information about the Shades although I liked the Lords of Darkness introduction.

Have you read Sean K Reynolds pieces on Netheril, Archwizards, and the Return of Shade and Shadovar, Shades, and the City of Shade? Both are good articles, IMO.

I agree with you that they messed up Elminster, but that only shows that Hell isn't a place that you just stroll into (even if you happen to be an archmage and a chosen of Mystra ).

Appreciate the hyper link it basically matched The Lords of Darkness source books and the Shadows which had some nice stats. I've read some of the FR books but they never translate as well to gaming so prefer to stick to campaign source books and other gaming material like non contradicted 1E and 2E sources along with new dragon articles. Like to keep an open mind so let me know what three you consider best and I'll check them out if I haven't already.

I like the ideal of a Cormyr, Dales, Northern, Raven's Bluff or Sword Coast 1350s+ campaign which gives you 20+ well documented campaign gaming years. Start off Treasure Hunt mid 1350s making second or third level...... Daggerford and the militia.....Off to Waterdeep for a few adventures and maybe down into undermountain. Maybe a few planescape adventures the Forgotten Stairway or Well of Worlds. There were some excellent campaign source books and boxes produced. Visit Sigil and Greyhawk and The Temple of Elemental Evil or Save the multiverse from Vecna in Sigil or Acererek on the Negative plane. The Greyhawk Wars. Visiting Zakhara as Ajamis and some of those Fantastic Memorable Arabian Nights style campaign adventures.

The Chosen, Spellfire, The Harpers and Halaster BlackCloak are good examples that don't always translate well or even contradictory. Avatar crisis and Harpers lynching the heroes for killing Elminster, Alustriel this beloved Good ruler Not letting Drzzt into Silvery Moon but letting known Villains have access and entry, Shandaril killing Dragons with spellfire.

Believe it is the First Level of the Abyss that is the easiest to escape from unfortunately sometimes just puts you deeper into the abyss.

You shouldn't bring a dagger to a stick fight when the stick is a staff or a wand.

don't know much about the Abyss, but Drizzt and company have survived Tarturus/Carceri, though with difficulty.

Adventuring in the abyss is risky even for avatars or epic mortals (Finder when facing Moander, Waukeen when fleeing the Avatar Crisis and being betrayed by Grazzt.

Even the least evil of the dark planes are dangerous (Pandemonium, Acheron)
